How Much Does Healthcare SEO Cost in the UK?

Colleagues discussing strategy around a laptop in a bright office

How much does healthcare SEO cost in the UK? Published UK averages for general SEO are roughly £900 to £1,000 a month on retainer, about £1,500 for a one-off project and around £400 a day for consultancy. Healthcare work can need more time because of clinical review and advertising rules, so your own quote depends on scope, not an average.

This guide explains the three pricing models, what the published figures do and do not tell you, what pushes a quote up or down, what a fee should include, and how to compare proposals without being misled. It is written for clinic owners and practice managers, so it avoids jargon where it can. For how we quote across every service, see our healthcare marketing pricing page.

What are the three ways agencies charge for healthcare SEO?

Almost every SEO quote falls into one of three models. They suit different situations, and the cheapest headline number is rarely the best fit.

  • Monthly retainer. A fixed fee each month for an agreed set of ongoing work: technical fixes, content, local search, reporting and a regular call. Best when you want steady progress and a team that learns your clinic over time.
  • Fixed-price project. A set fee for a defined piece of work, such as an SEO audit, a site migration plan or a set of treatment pages. Best when the problem is clear and finite.
  • Hourly or day-rate consultancy. You pay for time, often to advise an in-house team or to review an existing agency. Best when someone on your side can carry out the recommendations. Our SEO consultancy page explains how this works in practice.

Many clinics start with a project (an audit and a roadmap) and then move to a retainer once they know what needs doing. That order tends to produce better-scoped quotes.

What do published UK SEO prices look like?

We have not found a UK price survey that is specific to healthcare, so any figure here comes from general SEO pricing. According to the lead-matching site Expertmarket (updated March 2025), the average UK SEO retainer is about £1,000 a month, a project about £1,500 and a day rate about £400. It notes that a retainer usually buys one to three days of agency time a month.

Adzooma's review of UK agency costs, built from public pricing and submissions from UK agencies, lands in a similar place: roughly £395 a day, £900 a month on retainer and £1,550 per project. It warns that these are averages that ignore the hours and the exact service involved.

Treat both as a sanity check, not a benchmark. Neither is healthcare-specific, neither publishes a full methodology, and both come from commercial sites. A quote far below these figures deserves questions about how little time it buys. A quote well above them should be explained by scope.

We do not publish Pulse Digital Health fees on this page because a sensible number depends on your site, your specialty and your area. For a wider view of budget, see our guide to how much private clinics spend on marketing.

What drives the cost of healthcare SEO?

Two clinics can ask for the same service and receive very different quotes. In our experience these are the factors that move the number most.

  • Competition. Ranking for a high-value treatment in central London is a different job from ranking for a niche service in a smaller town.
  • Size of the site. More treatments, more locations and more clinicians mean more pages to plan, write, review and maintain.
  • Starting condition. Slow pages, duplicate content, a messy structure or a past migration problem add fixing work before growth work.
  • Content volume and clinical review. Patient-facing health content needs accuracy checks and, ideally, sign-off by a clinician. That takes time on both sides.
  • Compliance. Wording on services, claims and before-and-after material has to respect the rules. See our guide on whether doctors can advertise in the UK. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
  • Local search. Multiple sites need separate Google Business Profile and location page work. Our local SEO service page covers this.
  • Authority building. Earning relevant mentions and links is slow, careful work and is priced accordingly.
  • Reporting and meetings. Weekly calls and booking-level reporting cost more than a monthly PDF.

What should a healthcare SEO fee include?

A proposal should say, in plain language, what you receive each month. A useful structure has an initial phase and a monthly phase.

Set-up phase

  • A technical and content audit of the current site
  • Keyword and demand research for your treatments and area
  • A prioritised plan with owners and dates
  • Tracking checked in Google Search Console and Google Analytics, so enquiries and bookings can be measured

Monthly phase

  • Technical fixes agreed in the plan
  • A stated amount of new or improved pages, with clinical review built in
  • Local search work: Google Business Profile, citations and review prompts
  • Authority building, if included
  • Reporting that connects search activity to enquiries, plus a regular call

What is usually not included

Ask directly about anything below. These are often separate lines or separate suppliers.

  • Website design, development or hosting changes
  • Paid advertising management and the ad spend itself
  • Photography, video and design work
  • Your clinicians' time for review and quotes
  • Third-party tool subscriptions, if charged on top

How long before you see results from SEO spend?

Search engines do not publish a delivery date, and Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO does not give a timeframe in months. It tells you to ask any provider what results they expect and in what timeframe, and how they will measure success. Treat a vague answer as a warning.

In our experience clinics should expect progress to build over months, not weeks, with new pages taking time to be found and trusted. Our guide on how long healthcare SEO takes sets out what usually happens in each stage.

This affects cost in a practical way. A retainer you cancel after six weeks is money spent without a fair test. Agree a sensible initial period, with clear milestones you can check, and an exit route if they are missed.

How do you compare healthcare SEO quotes fairly?

Quotes that look similar on price can contain very different amounts of work. Ask each agency to fill in the same grid, with quantities rather than adjectives.

  1. One-off set-up: audit, research, plan and tracking. What is delivered, and what is the fee?
  2. Technical work each month: hours or defined tasks, and who carries them out on your website.
  3. Content each month: how many pages are written or improved, and who reviews them clinically.
  4. Local and authority work: what is done, and how it is kept within advertising rules.
  5. Reporting and contact: what you receive, how often, and who you speak to.
  6. Term and exit: minimum length, notice period, and who owns the accounts and content afterwards.

Once every quote is in the same format, the differences become obvious. Our SEO proposal checklist goes through this in more detail, and our guide to choosing a healthcare SEO agency covers the wider selection process.

What are the red flags in an SEO quote?

Google's guidance for people hiring an SEO is a useful starting point. It states that no one can guarantee a top ranking, and it names claims of a special relationship with Google as a warning sign. Beyond that, we would watch for the following.

  • A guaranteed ranking, position or number of patients.
  • Vague methods, or an unwillingness to explain what will be changed on your site.
  • Link schemes or bulk directory submissions. Google says you remain responsible for your contractors' actions.
  • A low fixed package that is identical for every industry, with no mention of clinical review or advertising rules.
  • You do not own the Search Console, Analytics or Google Business Profile accounts.
  • A long lock-in with no review points or exit terms.
  • Reports that show rankings and traffic but never enquiries or bookings. Our article on vanity metrics versus revenue explains why this matters.

How to decide what to spend on healthcare SEO

Start from the patient value of the work, not the monthly fee. If a treatment is worth a four-figure sum per patient, a few extra bookings a month can justify a considered budget. If you do not yet know that figure, our guide to what private clinics spend on marketing can help you work it out.

  • Single clinic, modest competition, someone in-house to coordinate: a consultancy or lighter retainer may be enough.
  • Competitive specialty or several treatments to grow: a retainer with content and clinical review is usually the better fit.
  • Unsure what is wrong: buy an audit first, then decide.
  • Multiple sites: budget for location-level work, not just the main website.

Whatever you choose, agree what success looks like before work starts: enquiries, booked consultations and the treatments you want more of. You can read more about our approach on the healthcare SEO service page.

So how much does healthcare SEO cost for your clinic?

Published UK averages put general SEO at around £900 to £1,000 a month, but your price depends on competition, site size, starting condition and how much clinical review you need. Use the averages to spot quotes that look too cheap or unexplained, then compare proposals line by line. A good quote tells you what you get, when, and how it is measured.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How much does healthcare SEO cost per month in the UK?

No healthcare-specific UK survey exists that we could find. General UK sources put SEO retainers at roughly £900 to £1,000 a month on average. Healthcare quotes can sit higher when clinical review, compliance checks and several locations are involved. Ask for a scoped quote, not an average.

  2. Is a monthly retainer or a one-off project better for a clinic?

A project suits a clear, finite job such as an audit or a set of treatment pages. A retainer suits ongoing growth. Many clinics start with an audit, then move to a retainer once priorities are clear. Avoid committing long term before you have seen the plan.

  3. Why do healthcare SEO quotes vary so much?

Quotes differ in hours, content volume, clinical review, number of locations and reporting. Competition in your specialty and the condition of your website also matter. Two quotes at the same price can hide very different workloads, so compare quantities, not just fees.

  4. Does the SEO fee include website changes and content?

Sometimes, but not always. Many agencies separate web development, photography and paid advertising. Content is often limited to a set number of pages a month. Ask exactly how many pages, who writes them, and who gets clinical sign-off.

  5. How long before healthcare SEO pays for itself?

No one can promise a date. Google tells people hiring an SEO to ask what results to expect and when, and how success will be measured. In our experience progress builds over months. Agree milestones and review points before you commit to a term.

  6. Can I do healthcare SEO in-house instead of paying an agency?

Possibly, if someone has the time and skills for technical checks, writing and measurement. Google notes small local businesses can often do much of the work themselves. A middle route is paying for an audit or day-rate consultancy and carrying out the actions in-house.

  7. What are the biggest red flags when pricing SEO?

Guaranteed rankings, secrecy about methods, link schemes, one identical package for every industry, no ownership of your accounts, and reports without enquiry data. Google states no one can guarantee a top ranking, and that you remain responsible for what your contractors do.

  8. Should I choose the cheapest healthcare SEO quote?

Not automatically. A very low fee may buy very little time, and fixing poor work later can cost more. Equally, the highest quote is not proof of quality. Choose the proposal that is clearest on scope, measurement, ownership and exit terms.

Accelerate your clinic's growth.
