AI search optimisation for UK private clinics
AI search optimisation for clinics, also called generative engine optimisation (GEO), is the work of making a clinic's information clear, accurate and easy to find for AI answer tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says no special markup is required, so most of it is sound SEO plus consistent facts about who you are. We cannot promise citations.
It is a healthcare service, not a generic marketing add-on. Patients now ask AI tools which clinic to see for a symptom, what a treatment involves and what it costs. The answers draw on your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, hospital profiles and press. If those sources are thin or inconsistent, the AI answer is too, and in healthcare a wrong answer about a clinician, a treatment or a price can mislead a patient.
Competitors sell this as a separate product with large claims. We would rather show you what is known, what is only correlation and what we actually do for UK private clinics, consultants and groups. This sits inside our wider digital marketing for healthcare approach, not apart from it.
What our AI search audit for clinics covers
Every engagement starts with an audit. For a private clinic or consultant it covers:
Patient prompt testing: we write the questions patients ask about your treatments, conditions, clinicians and area, run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and record whether you are named, what is said and which sources are cited. We repeat runs because answers vary.
Fact accuracy: every claim an AI tool makes about you (address, hours, clinicians, registrations, treatments, fees) checked against your own records.
Source map: the pages and listings AI tools cite for your topics, including competitors, directories and hospital consultant profiles, and which of them you control.
Site readiness: indexing, snippet eligibility, structured data that matches the page, named authors and clinical reviewers, and treatment pages that answer questions plainly.
Measurement: AI assistant referrals in GA4 and how they compare with other channels on enquiries.
The audit report lists what AI tools currently say, where the errors come from and a prioritised fix list. Fees are quoted after a free strategy call; see healthcare marketing pricing.
AI search results from our clinic case studies
We track AI citations for clients as part of their search programmes. Two published examples, with the method and limits set out in each case study:
Dr Carla Perna, a consultant clinical oncologist: 162 citations across AI platforms alongside 890K search impressions in 9 months.
Gentle Procedures UK, a new men's health clinic: 67 citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode in its first 9 months.
These are results for those clients, not a forecast for yours.
How AI answers find and use sources
AI answer tools generate a reply and, in many cases, show links to the pages they drew on. The tools differ, they change often and most do not publish full details of how they choose sources. So we avoid describing any single tool's inner workings as fact. What can be checked is what the platform owners publish, and what independent studies measure.
For a patient, the practical result is that an AI answer may name a clinic, summarise a treatment or repeat a price. If your site is vague, out of date or contradicted by your listings, the tool has little reliable material to work with. If it is clear and consistent, you have at least given it something accurate to use.
What Google itself says
Google's Search Central page AI features and your website is the most authoritative statement for AI Overviews and AI Mode. In summary it says:
There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no other special optimisations are needed.
To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.
There is no special schema.org markup to add, and structured data should match the visible text on the page.
You do not need to create new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear.
Traffic from these features is included in your overall Search Console reporting under the Web search type.
That is a useful corrective to any pitch that treats GEO as a secret technique. Meeting the requirements still does not guarantee a page is crawled, indexed or shown.
What the independent studies do and do not show
We only cite studies we have read, and we say what they cannot prove.
Brand mentions: an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, published in May 2025, found that branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with how often a brand appeared in AI Overviews, ahead of backlink measures. Ahrefs itself stresses that correlation is not causation, and the sample was filtered towards larger domains and higher-volume keywords. We read it as a reason to earn genuine mentions, not as proof that mentions cause citations.
llms.txt: an SE Ranking analysis of nearly 300,000 domains found no effect from having an llms.txt file on how often a domain was cited, and its authors call the file optional and low effort. We publish one and a plain fact sheet for AI tools because they cost little, but we do not sell them as a lever.
What we actually do
Everything below is ordinary good practice applied with AI answers in mind. None of it depends on tricks.
Clear entity information: your name, address, opening hours, clinicians, treatments and registrations stated the same way on your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings. See healthcare local SEO.
Structured data that matches the page: schema used only where it reflects visible content, as part of technical SEO and on-page SEO.
Author and reviewer credentials: named authors and clinical reviewers with their qualifications and review dates, as covered in our guide to E-E-A-T trust signals for medical websites.
Helpful, specific content: pages that answer real patient questions plainly, planned through content strategy and written with SEO copywriting.
Third-party mentions and listings: accurate profiles on relevant directories and professional bodies, and earned coverage through link building.
Tracking AI referrals in GA4: grouping visits that arrive from AI assistants so you can see how many reach the site and whether they enquire. GA4 lets you build a custom channel group for this. Reporting is part of SEO performance reporting.
What we do not promise
We do not guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google will mention or cite your clinic.
We do not guarantee rankings, a number of AI referrals or a timescale.
We do not claim that markup, llms.txt or any single file will change what AI tools say.
We do not publish content just to feed AI tools. Health pages are written for patients and checked by a clinician.
AI answers also vary between runs, users and locations, so a single screenshot of one prompt is weak evidence either way. Our posts on AI for private clinics: hype versus reality and SEO versus GEO versus AEO explain the vocabulary without the hype.
How this connects to your SEO
If your pages are not indexed, load slowly or say little of substance, no AI-specific work will help. That is why we usually start with the foundations in healthcare SEO, and an SEO audit is the quickest way to find them. For more detail on how AI tools treat smaller clinics, read why a smaller rival gets recommended by AI tools, our overview generative engine optimisation for healthcare and the specialty example AI search for dentists.
Checks you can do yourself
Ask two or three AI tools the questions a patient would ask about your treatments and area, and note what they say about you.
Check every fact in the answer against your website. Wrong opening hours, services or clinician details usually point to inconsistent listings.
Confirm your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and can show a snippet.
Look in GA4 for visits from AI assistants and compare their enquiry rate with other channels.
Repeat monthly, because answers change.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. If an AI tool makes a clinical or regulatory claim about your service that is wrong, correct the source information first and take advice if it could mislead patients.

FAQs: AI search optimisation for clinics
What is AI search optimisation, or GEO, for a clinic?
AI search optimisation, also called generative engine optimisation (GEO), is the practice of making your content and business information clear and trustworthy enough for AI tools to use when they answer questions. It overlaps heavily with SEO.
For a clinic, it means consistent facts, credible authors, helpful pages and accurate listings. It does not guarantee that any AI tool will mention you.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google's Search Central guidance says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews and AI Mode, no special schema.org markup, and no need for new machine-readable files. Pages must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and structured data should match the visible text.
Can you guarantee my clinic will be cited by ChatGPT or Gemini?
No. These tools choose sources in ways their owners do not fully publish, and answers vary between users and over time. We can improve the clarity, consistency and credibility of what is available about you, and report on any AI referrals. We never guarantee citations or rankings.
How do you track traffic from AI assistants?
We group visits that arrive from known AI assistant domains in GA4, usually with a custom channel group, and compare their engagement and enquiries with other channels. Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and appear as direct traffic, so the figures will understate the true total.
We report that limit openly.
Is AI search worth investing in for a small private clinic?
It is worth getting the basics right, because they also help Google search and patient trust: accurate listings, clear treatment pages, named clinicians and a fast site. A large separate AI budget is harder to justify while measured AI referrals remain small. We would review your data before recommending anything.
Is AI-generated content safe for medical pages?
Only with care. AI drafts can contain errors or unsupported claims, which matters in health. Any page about treatment or conditions should be checked by a qualified clinician and against UK advertising rules before publishing. We do not publish unreviewed AI text for health topics.
